Baby Highlander Known as the “Richard Avedon of dog photography,” Valerie Shaff has made a name for herself photographing celebrities with their canine companions. The list includes Martha Stewart, Sting, Kevin Bacon, Candice Bergen, Peter Fonda, and Alicia Silverstone. Shaff has also collaborated with Southern humorist Roy Blount Jr. on a series of books that combine Shaff’s candid animal portraits with Blount’s whimsical poetry, with such titles as If You Knew How Much I Smell You: True Portraits of Dogs and Am I Pig Enough for You Yet? Voices of the Barnyard. The latest in the series is a cat book, I Am the Cat, Don’t Forget That, which will be published this fall by HarperCollins. Shaff moved to Columbia County from Manhattan in 2000, and the cover image was taken at a farm in the town of Standfordville. Taking pictures at a small farm early one morning, Shaff spied the baby Highlander. “He was so goofy looking with that little bit of spittle on his mouth,” says Shaff. “He looked like a little troll.” Shaff lives in Germantown with her 120-pound Rhodesian
ridgeback, Rex. Her photographs can be viewed at
