Rope Line (detail)
Greg Drasler, oil on canvas, 70"x80", 2004

New York City–based painter Greg Drasler is an artistic descendant of Rene Magritte. Drasler’s work is full of ornate, claustrophobic interiors with surreal elements (out-of-place umbrellas and wire hangers) and disconcerting proportions (floors tilting at odd angles)—enigmatic koans suffused with symbolism just beyond parsing.

Rope Line is taken from a series of paintings Drasler has been working on for the past 10 years about crowds and crowd dynamics. All are tinged with nostalgia—like outtakes from a 1940s tickertape parade in Times Square. Rope Line was most recently shown as part of Drasler’s one-man show “Claustrophilia” in April at the Manhattan location of the Van Brunt Gallery. (There is also a Beacon location of the Van Brunt Gallery.)

The recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in 1991 and a National Endowment of the Arts Fellowship in 1993, Drasler teaches painting at Princeton University.
