For us greenthumbs and doting houseplant parents, a good plant shop is the proverbial candy store—delicious and dangerous. We would spend all our money on that rare variegated variety or that new planter set if our bank accounts (and our spouses) wouldn’t reprimand us. Finding a new plant shop is a joy, even if we have to pace ourselves.
The Hudson Valley is dotted with large nurseries, which carry a selection of houseplants in addition to their landscaping shrubs, flowers, and trees (Adam's greenhouse is a tropical oasis). But tucked in among these bigger players, and a handful of cute and carefully curated plant boutiques waiting to charm you. Whether your love of plants is new to lockdown of lifelong, and whether you're hunting for a gift or adding to your own jungle, these sweet independent plant shops in the Hudson Valley have you covered. Here are seven of our favorites.
Flora Good Times | Beacon
Florist Corinne Bryson founded this brick-and-mortar plant shop and floral design studio in 2019. At Flora Good Times, located on the west end of Beacon, you’ll find recognizable design celebrity plants like the Peace Lily, Monstera Deliciosa, Fiddle Leaf Fig, and String of Pearls, alongside fresh flowers and vibrant, made-to-order arrangements. The shop offers weekly flower subscriptions, floral arrangements for weddings and celebrations, window displays, dried, and fresh flowers––all sourced from local Hudson Valley farms. The shop also provides greening services, plant consultations and care tips, pest diagnosis, propagation workshops, and plant trading. This cozy botanical boutique donates a portion of their sales to fighting for justice in food and farming systems, human rights, and local community initiatives.
Flowerkraut | Hudson
This Hudson plant boutique, owned by Amanda Bruns, makes an unusual pairing of plants and probiotics. At Flowerkraut, you’ll find a selection of locally sourced fresh flowers, plants, handmade ceramics, candles––and Hawthorne Valley sauerkraut. They offer eccentric and sustainable floral arrangements and bouquets like the Dora––Flowerkraut’s signature garden-style arrangement of wild and vibrant flowers, foliage, and textural elements for $100. Among the shop’s wide variety of indoor plants, they have Pencil cacti, Brikin Philodendrons, and small Pothos ivy plants for $7. Flowers and plants are available for local-delivery and pick-up. The shop has a small collection of hand-crafted wares from local and regional creators like macrame plant hangers and ceramic vases. You’ll also find crystals, spell books, matches, and other apothecary products––like Meadow Stars coconut wax candles and Hidden Folk essential oil incense sticks. The boutique hosts workshops for making flower crowns, flower arrangements, and wreaths––which are paused due to COVID until further notice.
Petalos | Kingston
Occupying a cute corner storefront in Kingston’s Stockade District, Petalos Floral Shop offers a mix of house plants and fresh flowers, specializing in small weddings and custom arrangements. While flowers certainly take center stage here, there is a healthy selection of small and medium-sized house plants, from pocket-sized succulents to haughty birds nest ferns and lush fiddle leaf figs. Over his 30-year career as a floral designer, Petalos co-owner Brian Bender-Tymon’s client list has included the Saudi royal family, Martha Stewart, US presidents, movie stars, senators, and visiting royal dignitaries. Through the shop’s website, you can curate the exact arrangement you’re looking for by selecting different types of flowers, colors, price range, and the type of occasion, or stop in to collaborate with one of the designers in-person.
Victoria Gardens | Rosendale
Victoria Coyne and her husband, Wayne Waddell, opened Victoria Gardens and gift shop in 2007. An intense remodeling turned a run-down turquoise shack into a spacious Adirondack-style wooden building. Their plant nursery offers trendy foliage, succulents, and cacti, from rubber plants to Swiss cheese plants, anthuriums to maidenhair ferns. The garden gift shop stocks trowels and clippers, planters, lawn ornaments, indoor/outdoor rugs, and lawn seating. The garden center has a selection of trees, shrubs, and perennial flowers that are curated specifically for the region; a knowledgeable staff is around to assist you in making the right selections for your space. Victoria Gardens offers special classes, events, and private garden tours in March through November. Their landscaping department has been working on Ulster County gardens for over 25 years––they provide a one-hour design consultation before beginning your garden to properly curate your vision.
The Parcel Flower Co. | Cold Spring
The Parcel Flower Company is run by husband-and-wife duo Marcella and Sam, farmer-florists determined to bring sustainably grown local flowers to their community. In addition to the organic flowers the couple grows on three different parcels of land around Cold Spring, they also source flowers from local growers. Their houseplant selection is small but elegant and will only grow as they move to their new location a couple doors down the road on Route 9. Find aloe vera, Boston ferns, ponytail palms, and more plants alongside mixed bouquets and artisanal ceramics and vases in the shop. Flowers, plants, and gifts can be ordered online and picked up in store or delivered within a 10-mile radius of Cold Spring. Members of the Weekly Parcel subscription receive flowers from local farms every Friday through pickup or delivery––The Parcel will send a video to you showing how to arrange your flowers.
Athabold | Germantown
Athabold boutique in Germantown was founded in 2016 by Shuheng Ji and husband Dan Djuplin. The word “Athabold” comes from Djuplin’s Icelandic roots, and means “everyone welcome.” They offer an array of products like dry bouquets, fresh flower bouquets, eco-friendly stationery, Middle Kingdom mini vases, Tono + Co scarves, and patterned pillows by designer Lisa Bengtsson. But we’re here for the floor-to-ceiling plant display. Olive trees, banana trees, money trees, ficuses, fiddle leafs, alocasia, jade plants, rubber plants, big honkin’ cacti, and so much more.
Meadowscent | Gardiner
Meadowscent in Gardiner is a family-owned business that offers floral arrangements, gifts, and potted plants. The shop has a wide variety of houseplants and tropical plants ranging in size from two to 14 inches, including peace lilies, orchids succulent gardens, terrariums—all available for delivery nationwide. They also offer candles, diffusers, assorted chocolates, and other goodies.
